1. According to Braun (2000), the liaison between Buffy and Angel demonstrates the “emotional complexity of many ordinary human relationships” (para. 9). She also states that the series in general “demonstrates adult love quite well in its exploration of the aggression that accompanies intimate love relationships” (para. 10).In what ways do you think Buffy the Vampire Slayer achieves this?
2. The forces of darkness in Buffy, including vampires, demons and monsters are often symbolic of the experiences we encounter as we move from adolescence into adulthood. How can Buffy’s relationship with Angel be discussed in this way?
3. Why is the use of symbolism or metaphor, as seen in Buffy, often a more engaging or meaningful way to explore human experiences?
4. How does Buffy the Vampire Slayer play around or question traditional stereotypes often seen in more traditional forms of television?
5. The week 11 screenings contain evidence of the “moral ambiguity within the main characters” (Braun 2000, para. 15). Can you discuss this and provide examples from the screenings?
6. I didn't watch them because I wasn't in class on Thursday. However, I wouldn't have minded watching Buffy again (as it's part of the course and we have to learn about it), as in class is the only time I get to watch it. Buffy isn't really the type of tv. programme I like to watch. I prefer to watch The Sopranos and or Outrageous Fortune, as these two relate to real-life facts.
Q4. Buffy the Vampire Slayer fuses two traditional genres together. On one level, it's an action show about a girl fighting vampires, but on another level it's a relationship drama, that frequently strays into soap opera. What Buffy does is use the action conflicts to physically represent the emotional conflict of the characters. This is first done successfully in the second season when, after sleeping with Buffy, Angel loses his sould and becomes Angelus. In the following episode, 'Innocence,' Buffy and Angel fight, and through their fighting, Buffy attempts to work out her emotional issues with regard to the new Angel. So, while the fight is a necessary element, a physical representation of the characters' emotional problems. In conclusion, Buffy the Vampire Slayer brings together elements of the soap opera and the action series, and in the process create a new type of series. In using soap opera convetions, the series does not only serialize plot, character and symbolic development is also serialized, to the point that characters become the focus, and necessities of action or police investigation become background. It demands multiple viewings to understand the foreshadowing and implicit narrative development. In creating multi-layered, complex series, the creator develops a new type of television, one that is not designed for episode by episode payoffs, but instead, to create a larger world, one that is slowly revealed with each passing episode. By using the series to tell one massive story, rather than many little ones, he is able to create characters and worlds with a depth that film cannot match, thus fully actualizing television as a storytelling medium.
Q1. I saw from watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer that Buffy loved Angel very much, she adored him and this waz cearly shwon and is why I think she gave her virginity to Angel, because she thought he was the one! After Buffy and Angel are intimate and have sex it turns Angel from the good Angel to the evil Angelus (a vampire). Buffy then balmes herself for what has happened to Angel and holds herself responsible to fix what has happened to Angel (which is like many ordinary everyday relationships that are intimate, were one of the two feels they are more responsible and need to take control and fix what has occured). Buffy and Angel are now arch enemies because Buffy is the vampire slayer and Angel is now a vampire who is also out to kill Buffy. Because they used to love each other it makes to rivalry between the two a lot stronger. According to Beth Bran (Pg 69) "Both Buffy and Angel contain the capacity for great love and great aggresion towards each other".
Q2. Buffy's relationship with Angel is definetly very complicated. It is very lcear that Buffy adores and wants to be with Angel but he really is the enemy (because he used to be a demon/vampire). Their relationship can defiently be seen as a step into adulthood because Buffy has to make the decisions for herself and what is right and wrong! We all go through these things in relationships or even other problems when growing up, in a way it helps us to become an adult when you have to decide things for yourself and make own judgements to what you think is right/wrong. Buffy is clearly in conflict about her relationship with Angel because in a way she cannot decide what is right or wrong with them and their relationship.
Q3. I havent answered question 3 yet, a tad confused about it. Trying to find something in the book of readings to start me off.Has ne one else got anything yet??
Q4. Buffy is a show about supernatural forces but it deals with real issues and conerns in life for teenagers. It challenges the forces of gender stereotype (Wilcox and Lavery, 2002, Pg 4). It also deals with the generational gap (Wilcox and Lavery, 2002, Pg 4). According to Wilcox and Lavery the problems that teenagers face become literal monstors in Buffy (pg 4). Buffy really has two genres to it, its an action show about a girl fighting evil bad people (vampires/demons) but then it is also a kind of soap opera drama where relationships are brought into play etc. This is clearly shown in Buffy by the relationships that Buffy and Abgel had. (Like what Yasodhara has said), agreeing with everything she has said about Q4 just adding a bit on to it!!
Q5. In Buffy it is not very clear to you who would be the villan and who would be the good guy or hero in other words. In some instances the villan can do something good which suprises the audience and may change their views on them and then the good guy or hero can do something out of the orindary to make you think twice about them and suspect things about them that you hadnt before that. "The sensitive band member is transformed into vicious werewolf in some particular days; a now human teenager was once a demon". (Pg 69). Every person can have two sides to their character or personality, one good and one bad side, where the two can be shown at different times or maybe at once. I think an example is with Angel how before he is intimate with Buffy he is good, caring and sincere but after being intimate with Buffy it is liek his true character comes back to life or his bad side, where he turns into Angelus (a vampire) who is now out to kill Buffy, he now hates her and wants her dead, but the night before he loved and slept with Buffy.
Q6. As I watch more Buffy episodes I am getting more interested. I liked watching both the episodes on Thursday because they showed Angel turning into Angelus. I feel I am understanding a bit more about the genre, but I think the main reason why I liked watching this weeks epidoes more than other weeks is because there were not as many vampires against Buffy fighting scences, it was more about the relationship between Buffy and Angel (like a soap drama) which is what I am more into watching! But I will keep watching and youu never now I might get addicted to Buffy haha.. How did u other guys find this weeks episodes? Also sad that you missed the episodes of Buffy this week Yasodhara because I feel they were the best ones so far to see!!!
Q1. It's definately sure that Buffy loved Angel very much, she adored him!!! After the intimate sex between Buffy and Angel, Angel turns into a vampire who is ready to kill Buffy. Now buffy is responsible for taking the old angel back, turning him into a ordinary human.....beacasue she loves him so much!
2) Buffy is clearly in conflict about her relationship with Angel because in a way she cannot decide what is right or wrong with them and their relationship.
I agree with that point clearly- everyone goes through this kind of conflit and I think it really depends on our own choice.
4) Buffy is a show about supernatural forces but it deals with real issues and conerns in life for teenagers. It challenges the forces of gender stereotype (Wilcox and Lavery, 2002, Pg 4).
6) I definately enjoyed watching this episode, :-) It was something that I was able to learn and think a lot.
I really liked Buffy's personality and especially her appalling acting skills. The forceful and intimate symbolic features were represented well in the movie.
I think the use of the monsters made the programme more effective beacause the features on the faces of monsters and vampires revealed a feeling of horror
There were some specific parts that I couldn't understand a bit, but this didn't stop me from analisying the genres.
1. I think Buffy achieved a very good representation of human relationships. Relationships arent always perfect and non stop happiness, there are issues couples have to face and go through. One example where Buffy achieved this in the sex scene with Angel.
2. Buffy and Angels relationship can be discussed this way through Angel turning back into a demon once they had sex. When it comes to virginty and sex, girls have to decide whether their sleeping with the right guy and how sex will affect their relationship and the possible outcomes. In Buffys case, by Angel turning back into a demon it was a representation to teenagers out there that sex can be a wrong thing to do at times and there are strong repprecussions for your actions.
4. Buffy plays with traditional stereotypes through the characters always changing. In most literature references to lesbians and homosexuality isnt really talked about where as Buffy brings it into its storylines. Also in the first few episodes Cordelia appears to be the "bitchy cheerleader" but she ends up working with the 'scooby gang'.
6. Again i enjoyed watching Buffy this week. Its quite an interesting story to follow, and its constantly changing.
